Beat the Heat – Ways to Stay Cool

It’s so hot, but you’d like to enjoy the summer, too. What can you do to stay healthy while enjoying the outdoors? With heat indexes well over 100, it’s imperative that you take care of yourself, your families and your pets.

In this article, we look at how to beat the heat and ways to stay cool.

Tips for Staying Cool

The Center for Disease Control tells us to follow these tips:

  1. Drink more water.
  2. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink.
  3. Avoid sugary beverages.
  4. Stay in air conditioning when you can.
  5. Wear light-weight, light colored, loose fitting clothing.
  6. Limit your time outside.
  7. Don’t leave anyone in the car.

In addition to taking these steps for ourselves, it’s important to remember our pets. A dog house outdoors isn’t much better than an oven as there is little moving air inside. If you must leave your pet outside, leave them with plenty of water and make sure they have a shaded area. Like you, they are better indoors. And, don’t leave your pets in the car.

Tips at Home

There are things you can do at home as well to stay cool and help your air conditioner meet your needs.

First, you can wear less clothing. Again, drink more water. You can also leave your curtains, shades, or blinds closed during the heat of the day. This helps lower the temperature inside your house and take pressure off the air conditioner.

Jump in the Pool to Beat the Heat

Our favorite way to stay cool is in the swimming pool. Jump in yours, a friends, or the neighborhood pool. It’s a terrific way to cool off with friends and family and have fun, too.

If you need to cool your pool a bit, consider adding a fountain or some extra water. Got questions? Give us a call or stop by – we’re happy to help.
